No Tent Termite Treatment in Ormond Beach and Daytona Beach Areas
Drywood termites are located throughout the state of Florida, infesting the structural dry wood members of structures that are under construction and/or already built. Drywood termites are social insects that live in colonies. They are usually pale brown color and have soft bodies with a cylindrical shape. Swarming drywood termites have four equal size wings that extend beyond the body. The colonies are composed of kings, queens and soldiers. There is no worker caste as in subterranean termite colonies. Unlike Subterranean termites, Drywoods are not dependent on the soil or "damp" wood in a structure as starting points for infestations. They Obtain water as byproduct of digesting cellulose. They build their nests directly in dry, wall studs, floor joists, trim work, and other wood components. Although the Subterranean termite is more widespread throughout the United States, Drywoods may cause as much as 80% of the termite damage in some sections of the country.
Drywood termites cause serious damage to structures long before they are discovered. Possible signs of termite infestation include discarded wing, bodies with wings and hard pellets (size of a sand pebble). Drywood termites do not require ground contact for moisture unlike the subterranean termites. The wood members that are infested with drywood termites contain the moisture required for them to survive. Normally drywood termites will swarm only at night beginning in late spring through the fall (May-October). Building codes in Florida do not require new construction of structures to be treated for drywood termites. Normally during a swarming episode, a structure that has been targeted for settlement by drywood termites, several colonies can be established in any exposed wood members in the structure. Within 2-5 years, these drywood termite colonies will cause damage that is very destructive in many cases.
