After many ups and downs this winter, the warm weather may be here to stay – and with the warm weather come many bugs, including carpenter ants, termites, ticks and others. How can you prevent these small creatures from becoming a problem?
- Lawn Care. Keeping your lawn cut and trim, and removing any leaf debris promptly, can help significantly cut down in bug issues. Trim trees and bushes around your home so they do not come into contact with the building. Often times, bugs can pass directly from these plants to your home. Also, remove any dead stumps that are within 50 feet of your home. Look up at the trees, as well – any broken or dead limbs should also be removed, as these could be harboring colonies of insects.
- Check for moisture issues. These issues can range from leaking roofs or plumbing to blocked gutters to poorly ventilated attics and crawl spaces.
- Rectify wood damage. Replace any water damaged or rotted wood, as this can attract both termites and carpenter ants.
- Perform simple home repairs. It is important to seal any cracks around your home’s exterior (windows, doors, water lines and air conditioning units) as well as repair any screens on windows or sliding glass doors that bugs could squeeze through.
- Keep the inside of your home tidy. Leftover food in a pet’s dish or crumbs on the counter can attract both roaches and ants inside your home. Vacuum and clean floors.
- Remember the garage as well. Often times, we will allow clutter to pile up in the garage or shed – keeping these areas clean and uncluttered and inspecting them for pest activity on a regular basis is important.
